Stitched Meadow Wall Hanging Tutorial

I hope you are ready to relax and create a beautiful wall hanging from natural, organic materials! Along with the contents of your kit, all your will need is a pair of scissors and a pen. Let's begin...

Lay out your linen on the table. If it has gotten wrinkled in shipping, you may need to iron it. Center your instruction sheet on the fabric, 2" away from the top and bottom edges and 1" away from either side.

Using the masking tape in your kit, frame the instruction sheet, making certain not to tape the paper. The tape will be your stitching template.

Using your pen, mark the beginning and ending points of the stitching lines on the masking tape, 3 on each side. Lift the instruction sheet off the fabric.

Thread the needle with a length of cream-colored thread about 3 feet long. A needle threader is included with your kit. Knot the end of the thread.

Starting in any corner at the inside of the tape, bring the needle up from the bottom to anchor your knot, and then begin an in-and-out running stitch approximately 1/4" long for each stitch. Work your way all the way around the rectangle, following the edge of the tape.

When you are back where you began, knot your thread and clip the tail.

Your instruction sheet is labeled with 3 colors of thread and where they go on the design. Notice where you marked the beginning point on the tape, come up at that point with each color thread and create the "hills" with a 1/4-1/3" running stitch. The instruction sheet shows a pattern for the hills just to give you an idea. Try to end close to the ending point at the other side and knot off your thread.

When you are done, your design will look something like this...uniquely yours, ready for the next step!

Remove the masking tape.

To add to the natural, earthy feel of this piece, you are going to fray the edges of the linen. Carefully begin to remove threads until there is a 1/4" fringe on all sides of your wall hanging.

Using the wood hanger bars, sandwich the linen between the top bars, making sure it is smooth. Repeat with the bottom bar.

It is easier to place the flowers if you hang your work on a wall, but if this is not readily available, you may work on the table. Unbundle your floral bouquet and begin to slide the stems through the stitching to create your "meadow". Most stems will slide through all 3 levels, but you can create shorter stems that will just utilize the first or second level. Try to stagger the stems for a natural look. If the stems are catching on the threads, you may need to snip off tiny nodules or leaves. Don't worry if the stem breaks...simply use another or use that one as a shorter stem in your design.

Work across the entire hanging. Once finished, arrange the tops of the flowers so they all all varied in height.

You can then use your scissors and clip the bottoms of the stems so that they are even with each other and end above the cream stitching line.

Hang your "Stitched Meadow" somewhere where it can be enjoyed. If placed in full sun the flowers will fade somewhat, so try to avoid hanging near a sunny window.
