The Paper Moon Journal: Baby Scabiosa Stellata Seedlings

March 08, 2026

The weather here in Missouri for the last few weeks has been that of extremes...after a relatively dry winter, we had torrents of rain. Some nights have been frigid...perfect for seeds that need a blast of cold air to get them ready to sprout...but daytime temperatures have skyrocketed into the low 80's. My winter sown seedlings, tucked into their cozy milk jugs, have apparently received the "go" signal from nature's mysterious voice, and have all sprouted.  Read about their seed starting HERE.

All gardeners, no matter how long we have claimed that title, know the thrill of seeing the first little seed leaves, called cotyledons, push themselves to the surface of the soil. Cotyledons supply the nutrition to the infant seedling, and then will curl up and disappear once the true leaves develop. Six Paper Moon seedlings have sprouted so far. More will likely join them as our days are warming quickly.

Keep following the Paper Moon Journal as the seedlings grow and develop true leaves...before long they'll be ready to stretch out and be relocated to the field. Isn't Spring wonderful?
