The Paper Moon Journal: The Moon Meets the Sun

March 26, 2026

In the chilly days of February, tiny Paper Moon Scabiosa seeds were placed into recycled milk jugs and tucked into a sheltered outdoor corner of my farm. My goal was to provide the seeds with enough cold to remind them it was still winter, but give them the opportunity to sprout when they hear the whisper of warmer spring days, still protected from the season's unpredictable temperatures. You can read more about the planting of the seeds HERE.

Just two weeks later, after some surprise 80 degree weather in early March, the Paper Moon seeds were beckoned to appear...and the first seedlings peeked through the soil. You can see the first seedling HERE.

Now, March 26th, once again we are experiencing unseasonably warm weather and the thermometer is soaring into the 90's. While my tender annual seedlings are growing protected indoors in seed trays under lights, all the hardy annuals in milk jugs outdoors are beginning to break a sweat. The terrarium-like conditions in the milk jugs is the perfect environment during the chilly spring weather, but excessive heat can damage the tender plants. So, it is time to give them some fresh air and sunshine--the milk jugs were opened. What a sight to see the fresh green seedlings standing tall, their leaves turned to the sun!

The Paper Moon enjoyed sunbathing. And yet, when I looked at the weather forecast, it seems that our nighttime temperatures will once again drop to the low 30's. Thus, my seedlings will be closed up in their little milk jugs and be warm and safe for the night.

Once the seedlings have another set of real leaves and the night temperatures have warmed a bit and remain steady, the seedlings will be transplanted and take their place in the neatly spaced rows of the flower garden. Today they consist of only a few sweet green leaves, but they hold the hope of tomorrow...and their blooms will form the seed pods that will be part of yesterday...part of a "Bouquet Yesterday" dried flower craft kit, that is! There is much to look forward to!
