The Paper Moon Journal: Planting Paper Moon Scabiosa in the Garden

April 16, 2026

The time has come! The Paper Moon Scabiosa seedlings have been basking in the sun and growing tall in their containers. Our Missouri temperatures have been unseasonably warm...often reaching the 80's during the day and easily staying above 50 degrees at night. Since Scabiosa plants are considered "cool flowers", they can survive cool night temperatures and soil that has not completely warmed yet, so out to the field they go!

I have been working hard at preparing the beds...pulling straIy weeds, adding organic fertilizer, laying drip line. The Paper Moon seedling...along with its "siblings"...will make their home next to a row of Bupleurum that was planted in the fall and overwintered--so it got a bit of a head start.

The little seedlings will continue to grow and be able to stretch out a little bit now. The next time you will see them, they will have flower buds, and the miraculous transformation of a gorgeous flower to a geometrical dried seed head will begin!
